Hey, I’m Nancy!

Raw Vegan . United States . Joined in October 2015

I provide a private bedroom with a (lockable) door and a huge, delicious, healthy, organic vegan breakfast for you in the morning (if you desire it). I've been vegan for 45 years (and mostly raw (the last 5 years)). I'm very active in animal rights and vegan outreach and during the day work diligently on conveying in various ways the importance and relevance of these issues. For example, my group ROAR! (Reaching Out for Animal Rights!) (ROAR24.org) distributes t-shirts, tank tops, etc as well as literature; we produce a weekly tv show; and we are working on a full length documentary film (open to input). I have been hosting people on another (non-veg) web platform for the past three years and have received rave reviews. I am friendly, helpful and supportive. Please check with me to make sure the space is available, before you book. (Thanks!) ';-)

My Lifestyle

vegan, organic - mostly raw, fruits and veggies, juicing, however for breakfast, for my guests, i offer a wide variety of options (all vegan, organic).

Fun Facts About Me

i've been vegan for 50 years and doing yoga and meditating for the same. i’ve followed a spiritual and political path most of my life and including while raising my now almost 40 year old son. i’ve done just about every job one could imagine, from teacher (grades k-3), model, cab driver, phone operator, hospital worker, yoga teacher, sales person, factory worker, etc etc. (no brain surgeon or rocket scientist - yet!!!). my home is a little like a museum with my paintings, photos, drawings hung about. i am diligently working to save the planet and all her beings, so if i ever seem pre-occupied, that’s the work at which i’m most often engaged.

Hobbies & Interests

i am an animal rights / vegan activist and i leaflet everywhere i go. this often brings me into conversation with people, especially if they’re already into animal rights and/or veganism. in that case i will pull out my camera and (with permission) interview them for ROAR!’s tv show, which i weekly produce. though i have limited time, i love conversing with people. i love to dance and every once in a while, i take time off from my intense work schedule and dance for 2-3 hours non stop (at the "barefoot boogie"). i love to read and try to fit in several minutes a day. after yoga and meditation, i run a mile or two each day. i maintain a blog, am writing my memoir, once a month or so - i create a piece of art - what i call basket art - using inspiration from jean michelle basquiat and drawing with my left (non-dominant) hand. i keep a positive outlook about the world situation and encourage others to be as engaged in bringing about an egalitarian, communally shared, vegan, just, peaceful and loving planet.

Favourite Books, Music & Movies

i enjoy both fiction and non fiction books. i'm in the middle of a memoir now. i only read 3-4 books / year though i hope to increase that. off the top of my head, of fiction i enjoyed - sunflower and the secret fan, snow falling on cedars, the white tiger, the story of pi, the girl with the pearl earring, the poison wood bible (and almost all of barbara kingsolver books), their eyes were watching god, the color purple, the help, etc. i also enjoy poetry for example rumi, kahlil gibran, hafiz, june jordan, etc. of non-fiction, eternal treblinka - our treatment of animals and the holocaust, beyond beef - the rise and fall of the cattle culture, the dreaded comparison - human and animal slavery, why we love dogs, eat pigs, wear cows, the pornography of meat, the sexual politics of meat, man the huntED - primates, predators and human evolution, the descent of woman, guns, germs and steel, time before history, caesar’s messiah - the roman conspiracy to invent jesus, autobiography of malcolm x, etc i see a netflix film once or twice / month, so i have many favorites. off the top of my head - some famous ones - the matrix, fight club, shawshank redemption, dances with wolves, little big man, the great debaters, american beauty, braveheart, crash, the piano, 12 years a slave, sunshine, beasts of the southern wild, les miserables, beginners, a better life, empire of the sun, jean de florette, joyeux noel etc.

Languages Spoken

French - i studied French in school since 4th grade and can communicate fluently enough to be understood. Spanish - i studied Spanish on my own, traveled around Central America a bit and can communicate fluently enough to be understood. Russian - i studied russian for three years in college. German - i am studying german currently on my own and my communication schools are improving slowly. I know a phrase or two in about 10 other languages.

Education

Music and Art H.S., City College, Hunter College (B.A.), Cambridge College (Masters)

Where I Work

i am an animal rights activist and vegan promoter. i run a non-profit organization, called ROAR! (Reaching Out for Animal Rights!). to get the message out, we leaflet, maintain a "Vegan Starter Kit" stand, design and distribute t-shirts, tank tops, etc, attend demonstrations and rallies, video tape events and produce a weekly tv show.

Companion Animals

i love animals (including human ones), but sadly, since my two dogs went to doggie heaven, i am guardian to none in particular.

“The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.” Leonardo da Vinci ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Our grandchildren will ask us one day: Where were you during the Holocaust of the animals? What did you do against these horrifying crimes? We won't be able to offer the same excuse for the second time, that we didn't know. --Dr. Helmut Kaplan ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Auschwitz begins wherever someone looks at a slaughterhouse and thinks: they're only animals. --Theodor Adorno ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* As long as there are slaughterhouses, there will be battlefields. ~ Leo Tolstoy  ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* "The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for whites or women for men."~ Alice Walker ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it. --Milan Kundera

Review (1)

Lovely little apartment in Harlem. Super close to easy-to-use transit. There's also a vegan restaurant in the neighborhood so you don't have to go far for a meal if you need something convenient and close by at some point during your stay. Plus breakfast is included with this listing (fruit, cereal, almond milk, granola, toast with earth balance and vegan cream cheese). It was wonderful to have a safe, quiet little nest to call home during my stay in NYC. Wonderful, fun hostess with great stories who is super accommodating and communicative. An all-around awesome experience.
