My name is Emma and I'm a self employed, freelance writer from the UK. I mainly write about sustainable travel and how to become a more sustainable traveller (Instagram @that_travel for those interested!). My husband and I love to meet new people from all over the world and share stories together!

My Lifestyle

My husband and I lead a pretty relaxed lifestyle at home. When we're not off travelling, we are completely zero waste at home, and just spend our days in a pretty chill way. Durham is a quiet place and our lifestyle reflects that!

Fun Facts About Me

I can speak 6 languages! English, French, German, Swahili, Spanish and Latin (though that one is a dead language, so technically I can just read it!). I'm also

Hobbies & Interests

I love travelling - that's probably my main hobby! Other than that I tend to try lots of different hobbies, but wouldn't say I'm amazing at any of them... So far I've tried: climbing, crocheting, plants (I just got really into plants and gardening!), candle making, painting. I love to try new things!

Tour Guide

We're not licensed tour guides, but we know Durham really really well and we're happy to take you round on an adhoc tour, or point you in the direction of something more structured! If you need a lift anywhere near us, we're happy to take you - our car is electric, so if it's a long way then we would be limited by our battery, but happy to help however we can! I'll happily prepare any additional meals, you can eat with us at lunch time for an affordable price - we don't tend to eat much at dinner time but again, I'd happily prepare it for you for a small price, or help you with a restaurant suggestion in town.

Neighborhood

Getting around the area

The neighbourhood is pretty quiet - we are within an hour's walk of Durham city centre (or we will happily drive you to town if needed), where there are 100s of vegan-friendly restaurants and local businesses. We are happy to give recommendations for any of these. Durham is an often overlooked town in the North East but the surrounding countryside is beautiful, we have lots of hikes and interesting history, so you shouldn't be bored!!

About This Space

A closer look at the stay

About

We have a plant-based home in the UK and welcome other travellers to come and stay with us - we're happy to provide a home-cooked vegan breakfast each morning and any recommendations you need around town. Durham is a small place but has lots of great eateries for vegans, hikes and surrounding nature.

The space

We have a four bedroom house, but two of the bedrooms are currently being used as office space. Guests would have a private room with a TV and open closet, and the bathroom space is shared between the two of us and the guests (hoping to get an ensuite bathroom soon!). Guests are welcome to use our garden, kitchen and dining space, as well as our communal living space.

The kitchen

We have a pretty big kitchen with a full size fridge freezer (available for shared use with the guests). One of us is fully vegan, the other flexitarian, but we don't cook any meat or animal products in the house. There is plenty of counter space for cooking, and a hob and oven.

Other things to note

We have a guinea pig in the house - of course he is also vegan!! He is disabled and can't be housed with other animals, but is very friendly and loves humans. The house is generally pretty quiet and you're welcome to socialise with us or stay to yourself as much as you like. We have onsite parking on our drive or free parking on the road.

No long-term stays

We're pretty relaxed honestly, but we don't cook dinner in the evenings often, so it's important to know that you should make yourself at home if you want to cook and please don't wait for us! We'd prefer if you didn't bring other guests back and kept the place nice and tidy, and unfortunately we can't accept pets because of our guinea pig. If you'll be staying out or arriving late, please let us know and we'll see what we can do to arrange key pick up etc.
