Getting around the area
Salto del Caballo is a former smuggler’s house built right on the border. Quite literally. The front door opens into Spain, the back gate into Portugal, and the house wall marks the historic dividing line. Over the years, it’s been lovingly restored into a home for slow travellers, with nature, wine, and borderland stories at its core. Right downstairs is Bar Salto, our relaxed vegan wine bar and restaurant - open several evenings a week and serving natural wines from Spain, Portugal and beyond alongside informal meals meant to be shared. You’re also right beside the SMWP Wine School, where we host tastings, wine courses, and special weekends. Whether you're curious about natural wine or just want a glass in good company, there's always something quietly inspiring happening nearby. You'll be warmly invited to join us for a complimentary visit to our vineyard, just 7 km away on the Portuguese side. It’s where our wines are made: quietly, naturally, and always in tune with the land. We often host vegetarian picnics or potlucks among the vines, and you're welcome to join if the timing fits. You’re also welcome to take part in wine tastings and short courses at our on-site Wine School, where we explore natural wines, the stories behind them, and the land that shapes them. We’ll send you current options once you book, or feel free to ask us in person. There’s plenty more to enjoy in the area: – Walking and hiking routes through the Serra de São Mamede – Cycle the quiet borderlands through wild nature, with sweeping mountain views – Wild swimming in rivers, lakes, and hidden waterfalls – Visits to local farmers' markets and regional producers – Exploring Castelo de Vide with its historic Jewish quarter – Wandering the castle and cobbled streets of Marvão – Horseback riding through the hills – Old timer car tours on winding mountain roads Whether you’re here to rest, roam, or raise a glass with good people, you’ll find space, stories, and stillness in every direction.

About
Salto del Caballo: Two Countries, Two Apartments, One Wild Vineyard Salto is unlike anywhere else. This house is the border - with the front door in Spain, the back gate in Portugal, and the actual wall marking the divide between the two. Here, you’re not just visiting the borderlands, the history and wild nature - you’re living it. At Salto, we offer two spacious, comfortable apartments set in a peaceful courtyard blooming with flowers. Each one has two double bedrooms, two bathrooms, and views over the wild landscape of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Salto is also home to the São Mamede Wine Project, our small natural wine project rooted in the rhythms of this unique land. You’ll find our Wine School and Bar Salto on site: our informal vegan restaurant and bar where you can sip wine made just a few kilometres away and share a sunset looking out toward the beautiful hilltop village of Marvão.
The space
Apartment Spain is located on the upper floor of the main house of Salto del Caballo. The house was built directly on the border between Spain and Portugal — the front entrance opens into Spain, the back gate into Portugal, and the house wall itself marks the divide. The apartment offers soft light, mountain views, and quiet comfort. You’ll see Marvão, Portugal’s most poetic hilltop village, from your bedroom window. Inside, you’ll find: Two double bedrooms with comfortable beds and views towards Marvão and facing the old smugglers' route. Two bathrooms, each with a small bath, our natural soap, and soft towels. A cosy sitting room with a wood-burning stove - ideal for cool evenings or quiet mornings.
The kitchen
A fully equipped kitchen with a stove, fridge, kettle, and basic cooking supplies. There is also a washing machine in the kitchen.
