We value and respect privacy. We are happy to interact with guests upon reasonable request and always make sure to be available during bookings for any assistance that may be required. We are just a text away :) While we use only fragrance-free biodegradable laundry detergent, it has been challenging to find fragrance-free biodegradable shampoo and conditioner here. Ours have a light scent, but if you are entirely fragrance intolerant, please bring only biodegradable fragrance-free shampoos and soaps. Thank you!

Getting around the area
We are located 1 mile up (a quiet traffic-restricted road lined with old-growth mango trees) from a recreational black sand beach park that includes geothermal hot ponds. Getting here includes a beautiful fresh ocean air drive along the famous scenic Red Road of East Hawaii Island. Our favorite restaurant in Pahoa is Ning's Thai Restaurant where you can request vegan and vegetarian dishes. There is also Under The Bohdi Tree in Pahoa and in Hilo, there is Vibe Cafe for excellent vegan dishes.

About
Experience the tranquil magic that is East Hawaii. Pulelehua is Hawaiian for butterfly and they are plentiful here thanks to their host plants that thrive in our gardens. Are you interested in what low-impact, vegan, minimalistic off-grid living is like before you take that plunge? Well that's exactly what we offer. Come find out just how doable an off-grid and minimal lifestyle really is! Just off the scenic Red Road one mile up from the ocean. If you love East Hawaii, you'll love our location! When my partner, Mary and I first acquired our 5 acre property it was entirely covered with non-native and mostly invasive flora. We are in the process of replacing invasive species with native trees and plants as well as various food trees. Our guests will also be helping with this land restoration whether they are aware of it or not, because we will be purchasing one native plant with every booking we receive until further notice. If you happen to have any interest in this, we would love to share with you (upon request) what species of tree or plant that we have chosen for your booking, along with an update on how it is doing one year from purchase. The cabin is a single room with a queen sized bed. There is a covered outdoor minimalist kitchen just outside the front door that includes a refrigerator, propane camp stove and outdoor seating. Please note that we are off-grid, so there is no microwave oven. Attached to the cabin is an outdoor hot shower on one side and a private composting toilet on the other side. Mary and I reside in a house approximately 200ft away with palms and mango trees growing between the two buildings. Electric fencing surrounds the entire driveway and building compound. It keeps our local feral pig friends safe from getting under our post and pier house and prevents them from destroying our driveway and garden area. Parking is provided next to the cabin.
The space
Guest access is limited to the cabin area. We do not offer tours of the remainder of our property at this time. Please text us for assistance.
The kitchen
Minimalist outdoor vegan kitchen. Propane camp stove, frying pan, sauce pan, spatula, utensils, dishes, olive oil, salt and pepper, fresh drinking and washing water, 4.3 cubic foot refrigerator, table and two chairs.
Other things to note
We have two dogs, a collie and a Jack Russell Terrier. The terrier sometimes barks through her yard fence when a feral pig wanders by. Also, we are off-grid, which means that when the sun has not been out all day we need to supplement our battery storage system by operating a generator. The generator is the quietest one available here, and when it needs to be used, it only needs to be run for around an hour in the evening as long as guests are not requesting night-time showers. We would need to run it longer if a guest were to require a night-time shower. Cell phone service at the cabin is fine for certain carriers such as T-Mobile and Cricket. For other carriers such as Verizon and AT&T, service is spotty.

Quiet hours are 12 am to 6am. It is our hope that guests will remove shoes before entering the cabin bedroom. Guest access is limited to cabin area only. No tours of the property outside of this area are offered at this time. Please do NOT approach our fenced-in dog yard for any reason. We are aware of how cute our dogs are and they are difficult to resist, but one is extremely athletic and having strangers approach the fence risks her learning that she might be able to jump over the top of the 6-foot fence. Thank you for understanding this very important point. If assistance is required, please text.
