Hi, I’m Emily! I live in Hove, just a few minutes from the sea, with my two children and our cat, Harry. I’m a vegetarian chef at a private school here in Hove, where I spend my days cooking vegetarian food for the children, and I also run my own little vegan skincare company, Olive & Joyce, which I started six years ago. Everything I make is natural, vegan and handmade, so living a more conscious, cruelty-free life is a big part of who I am. Outside of work, I’m happiest outdoors. I love long walks, being by the sea, cold-water dips and generally making the most of living so close to the beach. I’m quite an active person, but equally love being at home, cooking, pottering about and enjoying a cosy evening. My home is vegetarian/vegan and I love the idea of Vegvisits because it feels much more personal than simply offering somewhere to sleep. I enjoy meeting new people and welcoming them into my home, and I’d love guests to feel relaxed, comfortable and completely at home while they’re here. I’m friendly, easy-going and always happy to share recommendations for lovely places to eat, walk, swim and explore around Brighton & Hove.

My Lifestyle

I live a pretty relaxed, healthy and active lifestyle. I’m vegan and ours is a vegetarian/vegan household, so there’s always plenty of plant-based food around! I love being outdoors and feel very lucky to live so close to the sea. Long walks, cold-water dips and sea swims are some of my favourite things, and I also enjoy running, kickboxing and generally keeping active. At home, life is quite cosy and laid-back. I love cooking, meditating, listening to podcasts and audiobooks, having a long bath and settling down for a quiet evening. I don’t smoke, vape or drink alcohol, although I’m completely happy for guests to enjoy a drink responsibly. I try to live consciously without being overly strict about it. I care about animals, the environment, reducing waste and supporting small businesses, and those values are a big part of the vegan skincare company I run too. Above all, ours is a friendly, relaxed and welcoming family home, and I want anyone who stays with us to feel comfortable and at home while they’re here.

Fun Facts About Me

I was brought up as a butcher’s daughter and spent time working on my uncle’s dairy farm, but somewhere along the way I went completely against the grain and became the only vegan in my entire family! I willingly get into the freezing English sea all year round. I have 4 jobs, run my own handmade vegan skincare company, Olive & Joyce, named after my grandparents, a chef at a school, dogwalker and house sitter and I write blogs for a vegetarian vitamin company. I talk to my plants, some of them even have names, and despite living by the sea, I still never get bored of walking along the beach.

Hobbies & Interests

I love anything that helps me slow down and switch off. I sew tapestries, read, write and meditate, usually with a decaf coffee somewhere nearby! I’m currently learning Welsh (slowly but surely!), and when I’m not being cosy at home, you’ll often find me sea swimming, walking along the coast or generally enjoying being outdoors. Writing is a big love of mine too, whether that’s for my skincare business, my blog or simply getting thoughts down on paper. I’m a bit of a mixture really – equally happy plunging into a freezing sea or curled up somewhere warm with a book and a coffee.

Getting around the area

We’re in central Hove, in a lovely spot just a few minutes’ walk from the sea. One of my favourite things about living here is being able to wander down to the beach for a walk, a sea swim or simply a coffee by the water. Hove itself has a relaxed, friendly feel, with lots of independent cafés, restaurants and little shops nearby, and there are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options within walking distance. Brighton is also incredibly vegan-friendly, so you’ll be spoilt for choice if you’re visiting for the food! You can walk along the seafront into central Brighton, explore the Lanes and North Laine, visit Brighton Pavilion or simply spend an afternoon wandering around Hove. We’re also close to Hove station, with direct trains to Gatwick Airport and along the south coast, and there are plenty of buses nearby for getting around Brighton & Hove without a car. It’s a great location if you want to explore Brighton, but lovely to come home to slightly calmer Hove at the end of the day.

About

Welcome to our little Hove hideaway! You’ll have the entire top floor of our family home to yourself, with a super king-size bed, your own private bathroom and a cosy sitting area with a sofa bed. We’re in central Hove, just a few minutes’ walk from the beach and within easy reach of Brighton, Hove station, lovely cafés, restaurants and independent shops. Ours is a relaxed vegan family home, shared with me, my two children and our friendly cat, Harry. You’re very welcome to use our kitchen and garden, and I want you to feel completely at home while you’re here. It’s a lovely space if you want the warmth and friendliness of staying in someone’s home, while still having your own private little retreat upstairs.

The space

Guests have the entire top floor of our Hove home to themselves, so although you’re staying within our family home, you’ll have plenty of privacy and your own little space to retreat to. The main bedroom has a super king-size bed, which can also be separated into two single beds if preferred, along with plenty of space to unpack and settle in. You’ll also have your own private bathroom and a separate cosy sitting area with a sofa bed, making the space suitable for up to three guests. Downstairs, you’re very welcome to share our kitchen and garden and make yourself at home. Our kitchen is vegan and you’re welcome to cook and store your own food during your stay. Our home is friendly and relaxed rather than formal, and I’m always happy to help with local recommendations or anything you need. As the guest space is on the top floor, there are stairs to climb, so unfortunately it may not be suitable for anyone with limited mobility, although I’m always happy to help with luggage when you arrive.

The kitchen

You’re very welcome to use our family kitchen during your stay. We have an oven and hob, microwave, toaster, kettle and a dedicated vegan air fryer, along with plenty of pots, pans, utensils and everything you should need for cooking. Our kitchen is vegan. You’ll have space in the fridge for your own food, as well as kitchen and worktop space whenever you need it. No meat, fish or dairy is prepared or eaten in our home, and I simply ask guests to respect this during their stay. We do have a cat, Harry, whose cat biscuits contain chicken, but his food is kept completely separate and is never stored in the kitchen. I’m a vegetarian chef, so ours is very much a kitchen that gets used and loved, and I’m always happy to help if you need anything.

Other things to note

We share our home with Harry, our friendly cat, who may well pop by to say hello during your stay! As this is our family home, you may occasionally hear the normal sounds of family life, although your space is on the top floor and feels lovely and private. There are stairs up to the guest floor, so unfortunately our home isn’t particularly suitable for wheelchair users or anyone who struggles with stairs. I’m always very happy to help carry bags and suitcases up when you arrive. Parking on our street and the surrounding roads is permit-controlled. I can provide visitor parking permits for a small additional charge if you’re travelling by car, just let me know in advance. We’re also very well connected by public transport, so you certainly don’t need a car to explore Brighton & Hove. Other than that, make yourself at home, and please just ask if there’s anything you need during your stay.

We’re a pretty relaxed household, so there aren’t lots of rules! I just ask that guests treat our home as they would their own. Our home is vegetarian/vegan, so please don’t bring or cook meat or fish in the house. We’re also a non-smoking and non-vaping home. As this is our family home, I simply ask that noise is kept to a respectful level, particularly later in the evening and at night. Please let me know in advance if you’d like to bring anyone back to the house who isn’t included in your booking. Most importantly, relax, make yourself at home and enjoy your stay with us.
