Getting around the area
La Maison de Wakefield is located in the Occitanie region of southwest France, in the picturesque Dordogne Valley, right where the Lot, Dordogne, and Corrèze departments meet. Martel, steeped in history, feels like stepping back in time with its cobblestone streets and 12th-century architecture. The village has everything you need for your stay - restaurants, cafés, bars, supermarkets, bakeries, boutiques, banks, and medical services, all within walking distance. You can live like a local by shopping at the twice-weekly farmers’ market. Surrounded by rolling hills, farmland, and walnut groves, Martel is close to world heritage sites like Lacave and Rocamadour, as well as châteaux, churches, parks, truffle and walnut farms, wineries, and distilleries. Nearby villages and towns often host brocantes and farmers’ markets. A vegan grocery store and café are just a 10-minute drive away and most restaurants in the village offer at least one vegan option. Getting around is easiest with a car, as public transport is limited. There is a sparse bus service to Souillac or Brive-la-Gaillarde, both with SNCF train stations. A small commuter also runs from St. Denis Martel, about 10 minutes away by bus or taxi, into Brive-la-Gaillarde and towards Figeac and Aurillac.

The space
The house is a three-story 18th-century stone villa in the historic center of a medieval village in the heart of the French countryside. On the ground floor, the front door opens into the kitchen, and the lounge features French doors leading to the courtyard. The courtyard is furnished with a four-person table, chairs, and a bench. The first floor has two queen bedrooms: Chambre Rose with its own ensuite, and Chambre Menthe, whose private bathroom is located on the ground floor. The second floor offers two more ensuite bedrooms: Chambre Olive, a queen, and Chambre Framboise, which has a single bed that doubles as a daybed and can also serve as a petite salon.
The kitchen
The farmhouse style kitchen features a 6-burner gas stove with an electric oven, along with a fridge/freezer, microwave, and washer/dryer. It’s stocked with plenty of cookware, utensils, crockery, cutlery, and glassware, including charming vintage pieces. There are 3 ways to make coffee including an espresso machine, a coffee percolator and a plunger (french press). The pantry is well-supplied with sauces, herbs, spices, flour, sugar, olive oil, vinegars, and more, plus tea, coffee, and hot chocolate.
Other things to note
The property isn’t suitable for children under 12 and doesn’t allow pets. It’s also non-smoking. As a three-storey house with a winding wooden staircase, it may not be ideal for guests with mobility issues. Access via a key lock box, and a detailed Welcome Book is shared before arrival, with a hard copy in the house. The property follows eco-tourism and sustainability principles, with bed linen and towels made from organic cotton and provisions that are organic, vegan, cruelty-free, and locally sourced where possible, including soaps, toiletries, and cleaning products. Guests are welcomed with a deluxe hamper featuring local organic rosé, ground, walnuts, jams, chocolate, and chips, plus a drinks tray with locally made walnut wine and pastis.
