About this space

Take a break and unwind at this peaceful oasis in a traditional chalet with beautiful mountain views over Lenk. It is perfect for 6 and sleeps up to 10. The chalet is divided into two apartments, one on each level, each with its own kitchen, living and dining areas, connected by outside stairs. The lower apartment has an exceptionally well equipped kitchen. The upper apartment has a dining table and kitchenware for 10 people to eat together. It is ideal for two families or a larger group.

The space

Outside

- At the front of the property is a west-facing, private, sheltered and sunny patio to enjoy the views from a comfortable sofa, hammock chairs or dining table.

- Around the corner from the front door is a private and sheltered firepit/BBQ area.

- There is a further patio area with hammock on the upper level on the south side, plus a west-facing balcony which runs the full length of the building.

Upper Apartment (OG) (48m2)

- The front door leads from the patio into the entrance hall which has plenty of space for shoes, coats and bags.

- The main living room has an open fireplace, large banquette dining table which extends to seat ten people, and a corner sofa which converts into a comfortable double sofa bed.

- There is a large smart, flatscreen TV, soundbar and sub woofer. The speakers can be connected to your phone with bluetooth. Netflix is included and you can log into your own account to watch other streaming services. There is a large selection of board games.

- The kitchen has induction hob, oven, dishwasher, filter coffee machine, toaster and kettle, under-counter fridge with freezer compartment, electric blender, whisk and mini food processor.

- Bedroom One has stunning views across the valley, a super king sized bed (180cm wide), bedside tables, a chest of drawers and space to hang clothes.

- Bedroom Two has a standard double bed (135cm wide) with a. single bunk above, making it ideal either for a couple, two friends or 2-3 children.

- Both bathrooms are recently fitted with shower, sink, toilet, heated towel rail and extractor fan in each.

Lower apartment (UG) (40m2)

- The front door leads from the patio into the entrance hall which has plenty of space for shoes, coats and bags.

- The main living room has a large dining table with four chairs and a large corner sofa which converts into a comfortable double sofa bed.

- There is a 56inch OLED TV, DVD player, soundbar and sub woofer. The speakers can be connected to your phone with bluetooth. Netflix is included and you can log into your own account to watch other streaming services. There is a carefully considered selection of DVDs, books and board games.

- An archway leads from the living room to the well-equipped kitchen, which has induction hob, oven, dishwasher, bean-to-cup coffee machine, toaster, kettle, blender and bread machine, large, American style fridge freezer plus much more.

- Also in the kitchen is a combination washer and dryer. There is a line, pegs and an airer to dry laundry outside (note, local laws prohibit drying laundry outside on a Sunday!)

- In a nook from the kitchen is a dedicated work space with a small desk, good lighting, power sockets, a colour printer/scanner/photocopier and office stationery.

- Leading through a doorway from the living room is the bedroom which has a king size four-poster bed with high quality mattress, a wardrobe and drawers.

- The bathroom is en-suite to the bedroom and has a shower cubicle with glass doors and a heated towel rail.

The apartment is heated by a storage heater in the winter. In the summer it stays relatively cool, even in the hottest weather, as it faces west, is nestled into the mountainside and is at altitude, so it is cool at night.

The kitchen

There are two kitchens, which can be particularly helpful if you have different dietary requirements within your group.

Both kitchens have a four ring induction hob, electric fan oven, dishwasher, toaster and kettle. Both also have plenty of crockery, cutlery and glassware and good quality cooking utensils, sauce pans and oven trays.

Both apartments have oil and vinegar, herbs and spices, coffee for the machines, sugar and a selection of teas to make catering during your stay easier and cheaper. Also, the water that comes out the tap is beautiful mountain water. Do NOT bring bottled water here!

The kitchen in the upstairs apartment has an under counter fridge with freezer compartment, filter coffee machine, electric blender, whisk and mini food processor. It also has tableware and a dining table to seat 10 people.

The downstairs kitchen is very well equipped because it was my permanent home for a while, I currently live in temporary accommodation and I love to cook! It has:

+ a large American style fridge freezer, bean-to-cup coffee machine, bread machine, stick blender, Nutri bullet and stand mixer.

+ Sodastream machine if you want fizzy water. + Spiraliser, tofu press, rotary grater, measuring spoons, cups and jugs and weighing scales

+ Baking ingredients, cake tins and cooling racks

+ Cocktail shaker, muddler, strainer, shot measure, ice cube trays

+ Breakfast foods: ingredients for the bread machine, oats, breakfast cereals, dried fruits, nuts, seeds, peanut butter and jam.

+ A wide range of store-cupboard food items such as pasta, rice and lentils. Gluten free foods, such as pasta, bread flour and couscous are also provided.

Advice on catering

The chalet is perfectly set up to cater for ten people. I advise preparing meals in the downstairs apartment then taking the food upstairs to finish and serve. A large grey box with handles on the sides, and a good selection of lidded bowls and other containers, are provided to carry things up.

If you want assistance with catering, I can provide personalised recipes with detailed instructions using equipment and food within the chalet and a shopping list of what to bring with you or buy locally. Just let me know if you are interested and we can discuss what sort of food you want, likes and dislikes, level of work etc. All recipes provided are vegan so this is a great option if you want to learn how to create more plant based foods

Other things to note

- The chalet is approximately 200 meters from the carpark at the top of the access road. Access from there includes around 100 steps and a narrow path. It is not suitable for people with mobility issues.

- The access road is narrow and steep. Snow chains are essential in the winter if you wish to drive up the access road.

- Arrival by public transport is highly recommended. Lenk train and bus station are 10 minutes walk from the chalet.

- Parking in town is 10-15 minute walk from the chalet, but you can drop off your things at the top of the road before parking. Town parking is free in the summer and costs CHF30 for a week in the winter.

- There is one, free parking space at the top of the access road available for your use. Additional parking at the top of the road is only by prior arrangement and is subject to availability and an additional fee as follows:

2 nights - CHF 20

Each additional night, CHF 5

- Wifi is fast (77 MBPS) and can be used to watch internet accessed channels on the TV.

- The following is provided for your use:

-- Toilet paper. Recycled, plastic-free toilet paper

-- UTZ certified coffee for the machines.

-- Household items. Washing-up liquid, dishwasher tablets, cloths and tea towels

-- Toiletries. Hand soap, shampoo and conditioner are provided

-- Dog bowls and blanket if you need them

-- Assurance that previous guests' pets haven't been drinking from the crockery! ;-)

- Info for vegetarians, vegans, allergies and environmental impact.

-- All food items provided in the chalet are vegan, this includes stock and gravy powders; we also have agar agar and nutritional yeast.

-- Gluten free foods such as pasta, bread flour and couscous, are provided and are labelled.

-- All bedding, furniture and furnishings are vegan (no feathers, wool, skin or fur).

-- The chalet is run on 100% renewable electricity, mainly from hydro electricity.

-- All furnishings have been chosen carefully to be as sustainable as possible, eg the duvets and pillows are made from recycled materials.

-- Household and bathroom products, eg shampoo and washing up liquid are all vegan and are chosen considerately to minimise environmental impact and packaging.

I live in Devon, England but lived for a few years in Switzerland, where I still go for the winters. I love snowboarding and like to go split boarding when I can. I have been vegan since signing up for Veganuary in January 2018. I love cooking and have a diploma in vegan nutrition. My partner and I are passionate about environmental issues. We are currently working on complete renovation of a house which we are doing in as environmentally friendly way as possible. We are aiming towards passive house standard and are using environmentally friendly building materials, such as foam glass for the sub floor and wood fibre insulation for the walls and roof.

Lenk is a historic tourist town thanks to the mountains, natural hot springs and, more recently, the exceptional ski area. It has around 2000 permanent residents and 8000 bedspaces for visitors. The local town has gift and sports shops, cinema, bars and restaurants. Next to the lake is an excellent children's play park. Events are scheduled throughout the year, the Lenk tourist office has more information.

Summer. This is a great location for hiking, biking and paragliding. Ski lifts run in summer for easier access to the mountains and you can hire mountain carts to zoom back down. There are also activities on the valley floor such as the pump track and tennis courts. There’s a little train that runs around the children’s play park and a café which is open when it is sunny! Events include the Jazz festival in July and the Switzerland Day celebrations.
-
Winter. Part of the Adelboden-Lenk ski area, this is an incredible location for skiing, snowboarding, sledging, ski touring, hiking and paragliding. Don’t miss skiing the World Cup piste on the Adelboden side. There are sports activities on the valley floor, such as the ice skating rink, e-snowmobiles and cross country skiing routes. Events include the New Year celebrations in the town centre.
-
I recommend the swimming pool and wellness spa. The main attractions are the big outdoor pool with inflatables in the summer and the outdoor warm bubbling pool in the winter. The waterslide and wellness spa, which has two saunas, a steam room, a plunge pool and a relaxation area, are open in the summer and winter.
There is a local bus service which runs along the valley, to the ski lifts and Simmenfalle at the end of the valley. This is free to use with the Simmental Card which is available with the apartment. The nearest bus stop is at the end of Rainstrasse and the bus station around 100m beyond that. There is a wanderweg (hiking path) accessible from the footpath leading the Chalet Chez Teddy.
There is paid parking available in town, 15 minutes walk from the chalet. There is usually paid parking at the top of the access road but this must be requested and arranged in advance.
Most cafes and restaurants in Lenk have a number of options for vegetarians, including traditional Swiss foods such as rosti, fondue and raclette. Options for vegans are very limited but a detailed list is in the guest handbook.
------
Local food shopping
There is a large coop supermarket in town (15 minutes walk). This has loose fruit and vegetables and a reasonable vegetarian and vegan section. You can buy meat replacements and alternatives, including tofu, tempeh, a range of burgers, sausages and plant-based alternatives to chicken (including Beyond Meat and the excellent Swiss companies Green Mountain and Planted). For dairy alternatives, there is an extensive range of plant milks as well as ice creams, yoghurts, mayonnaise and butter (Flora, unsalted, no palm oil). You cannot buy plant based cheese or cream cheese in Lenk....yet!
There is an Aldi in Zweisimmen. You go through Zweisimmen on the way to Lenk. It is 15 minutes by train or car. Aldi is much cheaper than coop, especially for fruit, vegetables and specialist vegan foods. Aldi sell plant based meat and fish products and, weirdly, some excellent vegan sushi! I also recommend the wonder burgers (unless you don't like things which are similar to meat!). They also sell plant based milks, yoghurt, ice cream, cheese, cream cheese and the same Flora butter.
Coop in Zweisimmen sells New Roots Fondue.
To sample good Swiss vegan cheese, go to www.fabulous.ch/veganshop and www.vegusto.ch. Vegusto make and sell their own vegan cheese and seitan-based meat alternatives. Their raclette is excellent as is their no-moo piquant hard cheese which has a strong cheese flavour and slightly grainy texture. Fabulous is an online vegan supermarket that sells a wide range of products. I recommend everything made by New Roots, a company in the nearby town of Thun, but especially their camembert alternative. You can also buy from New Roots direct at www.newroots.ch
