Eco cottage in Thekkady, Kerala, India
About this space
We are Sarah (British), Morten (Danish) and our Indian rescue dogs.The size of our property is 2.6 acres. It is unique in the sense that is has almost continuous tree cover of a few hundred old rosewood, almond, mango, jackfruit and orange trees. Under the canopy we grow coffee (Arabica, Robusta and Liberica), but our priority is to create a space where fauna and flora will prosper. On the property, we have identified around 40 different bird species, and mammals like slender loris, wild boar, porcupine and mouse deer.
The space
Our property consist two buildings made of handchipped stone: a house (for us) and a cottage/cabin (for you). The property relies on rainwater harvesting, and we have the world's most beautiful dry toilets! Our house is located 50 metres from the cottage. Meals and laundry facilities are available in our house.
Guest access: Our place is located in the Thekkady area, which is a main tourist destination in Kerala, mainly due to Periyar Tiger Reserve. Thekkady is actually a forest to which Kumily Town is attached. We are on the outskirts of a village 8 kilometres from Kumily. For us, this loation is ideal because it is far enough away to be able to avoid the busy town and the consequences of tourism, but close enough for us and our guests to easily get to places of interest.
There are a number of recommended activities in the Thekkady area. For instance the Nature Walk and Border Hiking in Periyar Tiger Reserve, local walking with or without a guide (we have created maps), cooking class with a local cook/artist or a local family, a half-day trip to Tamil Nadu which combines walking, temple visit, farmland tour and Tamil food, and, maybe, a spice garden visit, an ayurvedic massage or a martial art performance.
The kitchen
The tariff does not include food, but we can provide breakfast (continental with homemade bread, nut butters, fruit etc.) and dinner (Indian, Mediterraneanc, and South-East Asian). We are also happy to recommend restaurants that suit your budget and taste.

We (Sarah and Morten) left the UK in 2007 with the purpose of creating a life that was slightly different from the lives we were living in Europe. South India seemed like a good option, and we now have a property that is, in many ways, unique. We also have a band of Indian rescue dogs. Friendly and vaccinated.
