About this space

Our home is a renovated 1880 thatched roof farmhouse. The new-build guest house in the same style features a home office and combination exercise/laundry room on the ground floor, and a complete apartment above. It's where our friends and family stay when our guest rooms are full. Like them, you will have exclusive use of our small but very cozy nature lover's idyll, excluding the office space. There is ample free parking. It is conveniently JUST off the highway but quite peaceful!

The space

Our snug little apartment has everything you will need for your stay. There is a microwave, kettle, toaster, oven, induction cooktop, coffee maker, and refrigerator. The kitchen is equipped with all basic equipment. You will find coffee, tea, spices, condiments, and we provide a plant-based continental breakfast. The apartment is open plan, or loft-like in that it is one large room of 65 square meters (around 700 square feet), with the bed on one side and the kitchen on the other, with the bathroom (with shower) in between. There is a large closet and drawers for your use, and a flat-screen television and Bose CD player/radio. The downstairs utility/exercise room has a treadmill, stationary bike and rowing machine for your use. There are also a few free weights. It's a small-ish space, but we love the view of the outdoors from the windows! We have many books in English and Dutch, both novels and those dedicated to travel or art/culture in the Netherlands. Extras you will find are board and card games, and a variety of CDs. If we are at home and know your preferences we'd love to tailor some of those to your liking to make your stay more enjoyable!

The only caveat we have is the stairs are typical Dutch ones (ask anyone about the variety of problematic Dutch staircases!) with no hand rail. For 99% of people it is no problem, but anyone with serious mobility or balance issues may not like them (see photo). Also see below regarding farms and horse stables in the area.

We do ask that there is absolutely no smoking in the building, but guest are welcome to smoke outside.

Our parking area is quite large, and if you have a caravan, R.V., or trailer with a boat we can probably accommodate you!

Bring your kayak or canoe and put it in the water just across the street at our small dock, which is a wonderful place to sit and enjoy a drink while watching the water, the ducks, the occasional boat, or the rowers who are usually active on weekend mornings.

This is a place for travellers, bird-watchers, couples, singletons, novel writers, studying students (our friend did six weeks of study for his pilot's license here!), hedgehog peepers, ramblers, cyclists, boat lovers, photographers, artists, kayakers, and anyone who wants a calm home away from home in Holland. It, unfortunately, is NOT a place for parties, guests-of-guests, hard drugs, and excess drinking or noise. This is our home and it and our neighbours should be respected.

Having gotten that out of the way, we are looking forward to hosting you and helping you have the best stay you can while you're here!

Guest access: Guests have their own kitchen, wifi, flat screen television, Bose CD player/radio, washer and dryer, workout space, free parking, and use of bicycles. There is a large home office downstairs which will not be in use when we have guests, so you will have privacy inside during your stay.

The kitchen

The kitchen in the guesthouse is mainly for visitors, so not much food is stored there. There are coffees, teas, spices, and condiments. We provide basic plant-based breakfast items. There is an oven, induction cooktop, kettle, toaster, coffeemaker and basic kitchen equipment.

Other things to note

Despite being right off the highway we live in a somewhat "country" setting, surrounded on two sides by fields. Depending on the time of year, there are cows that pass directly behind the property, and you may see horses, sheep, goats, and any other sort of farm animals (a camel and alpaca on the other side of our canal spring to mind) in the fields adjacent or in many places nearby (as is the case in any part of rural Holland). The animals that will make everyone happy, I assume, are the birds and hedgehogs we feed and enjoy visits from!

Hi! I'm Amy, an American, and my partner Marty is Dutch. We both follow a vegan diet. For me it was after decades of vegetarianism, and for Marty it was after around 18 years of being 99% vegetarian at home and an omni outside. We've spent the last eight months making foodie trips abroad and researching restaurants and products in the Netherlands. It's been an exciting time for us, and we'd love to share our local knowledge with you! We're strictly vegan, but not judgemental with vegetarians, as that would be more than a bit hypocritical! We understand that people are in different places in that respect.

We enjoy a unique living situation on our property. We are located two minutes off the A1 highway to Amsterdam but are surrounded by nature, with a large front garden and fields on two sides, separated from our plot by a horse and cow path to the rear and water to the side. Depending on the time of year and the weather you may see farm animals (as in most rural parts of NL, there are cows, sheep, and horses all over the place, so it must be mentioned) or rabbits, foxes, squirrels, and smaller field creatures. You may see (or hear) a dozen or more different birds (songbirds, birds of prey, or herons and waterfowl) just from your apartment, and many more can be found in the surrounding area, which includes forest, wetlands, beaches, and meadow. If it's not hibernation or "baby" time, hedgehogs are nightly visitors to our garden. If you're into birds or beasts, bring your binoculars or zoom camera!
We are just outside the charming star-shaped fortified town of Naarden, which has shops, cafes, restaurants, galleries, walking routes, and a few small museums.
We are a short bike ride to the yacht harbour, golf club, nearby nature areas and towns. You can easily reach Amsterdam or the local towns but stay in peace and quiet for the evening without worrying about parking or security. You may wake up to the sound of birds or cows, but not tourists, city noises, or people or cars passing your windows!
There are endless things to do and see in this area, with an entire list just for children and families, and for Amsterdam. We are happy to share our favourites with our guests if we know what your interests are!
Favorite places: Amsterdam-very close by, easily accessible, and loaded with vegan restaurants and those with vegan options.
Muiderslot (Amsterdam Castle), a medieval castle and gardens a nice bike ride away.
Muiden, a charming little town on a sea lock. Sitting in the sun with a drink watching the boats, small and large, go by is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.
Naarden, a star-shaped walled fortress town. Cafes, restaurants, The Grote Kerk, the old City Hall, Saturday market, wine shop, a few galleries, nice walking routes.
We're happy to share our favourite spots in Amsterdam, Naarden, or elsewhere for vegan food (restaurants, shopping, or vegan pizza and ice cream delivery here) and other information if we know your interests. There is more than enough to do and see (and eat!) here than anyone could possibly cover in one visit!
Getting around: We are located two minutes from the A1 (to Amsterdam) highway and have a large private parking area right outside the door via our own gated drive. You can be in Amsterdam in as little as 15 minutes. Schiphol Airport is 34 kilometres away, or around 25 minutes by car. We are a ten minute walk to three bus stops, from where you can travel to several nearby train stations (the closest being Naarden-Bussum, 3.4 km away), into Amsterdam, or several other nearby cities. Trains serve various locations, including the airport.
There are several "park and ride" locations that make getting into Amsterdam much easier and cheaper than parking in the city centre itself. Some charge a small amount for parking and a tram ticket, and at some, such as nearby Weesp (6.1 km away), parking is free all day and you can travel by train from there to anywhere. Train stations also have bicycle parking, and most trains have special carriages for traveling with bikes. We have bicycles for your use.
Naarden Vesting (the walled fort town) is a four minute drive or a short bike ride (or slightly longer walk) away. There are marked trails of various lengths around the town or on the walls themselves. Muiderslot (Amsterdam Castle) is also a nice bike ride or 12 minute drive at 11 kilometres away. We have several bicycles available for use, and the flat Dutch landscape and bike-friendly dedicated lanes and traffic signals make for easy cycling!
There are walking/biking routes to the nearby small yacht harbour with playgrounds, pool, and restaurant, or to the equally close golf course or local small woods.
Taxis and Uber are also available in the area.
