About this space

Enjoy a peaceful getaway in this cozy cottage. Centrally located on Islesboro, the "Bohemian Bungalow" provides easy access to everything the island has to offer. Walk to nearby beaches, tennis courts, or the Historical Society, which hosts art shows, lectures, and other events. The studio sleeps two on a full-size futon sofa, and features a kitchenette, spacious bathroom, and outdoor dining area. Eco-minded host supplies line-dried organic linens, organic coffee, and vegan breakfast.

The space

The cottage is a "tiny house" tucked away behind a large workshop/barn, offering privacy from the road. The main house where the host lives is set farther back, with lots of space in between. Enjoy views of the garden, meadow, and shared yard from the bistro table on the cottage deck. Inside is one studio room and one bathroom. The studio room has a fold-out futon sofa, dining table, desk, dresser, and kitchenette with mini-fridge, bar sink, microwave, toaster oven, and electric kettle. (There is no stove or hot plate.) The full bathroom has a shower and plenty of elbow room!

Please feel free to enjoy the shared yard and garden. A local contractor keeps equipment in the barn and may stop by to pick up tools and supplies. Guests are welcome to use the fire pit with advance notice. Laundry room in the main house is available by appointment to guests who are staying a week or longer.

The kitchen

The host's vegan kitchen is fully stocked: blender, food processor, dehydrator, pots, pans, bowls, etc. The cottage kitchenette is stocked with basic dishes and utensils, and the host is happy to bring anything you might need from the main house to the cottage for your stay.

Host provides assorted breakfast items, which may include: freshly baked bread, homemade pastries, granola, hot cereal, orange juice, and fresh organic fruit. Please let me know if you have any dietary restrictions.

Other things to note

One friendly black cat named Josie lives on the property, and may stop by to visit you while she's making her rounds.

It's very quiet here at night, and there are no proper restaurants on the island. There are a couple of small grocery stores where you can get supplies and prepared foods (even pizza), and the Dark Harbor Village has a couple of shops that serve sandwiches and ice cream. There is even a food truck at the ferry landing that has veggie burgers and tofu dogs!

In 2008, for my 40th birthday, I went vegan and never looked back. I had been vegetarian for about a year before that, inspired by Thich Nhat Hahn and the stories of the Buddha, and took it to the next level after researching how to be a healthy vegetarian. I have also studied raw veganism, and spent a year fully raw while hosting raw workshops and potlucks at my home. My journey led me up the coast of Maine, and I now live on a peaceful island in Penobscot Bay, where I have an organic garden and enjoy baking vegan treats when I'm not working for the Town, sailing, or visiting my grandchildren.

Neighbourhood

The neighborhood, locally known as "Guinea," is friendly and fun. The Historical Society is usually buzzing with activity in the summertime, with art shows, concerts, lectures, and other events. Walking distance to the library, tennis courts, and a couple different beaches. The Town Center, with Post Office, Island Market, and Community Center, is just a short drive or bike ride away.

Islesboro is an island about 14 miles long, with many interesting places to explore. It is reached by ferry or private boat. The ferry can be very busy in the summer. Allow time for long lines or make a reservation. Check the Maine State Ferry Service website for the schedule. The last ferry is at 4:30/5:00pm.
On the island, it's easiest to get around by car. Everyone here waves to each other; please join in "the wave!" If you choose to ride a bicycle, be aware that the roads are narrow, with lots of curves and blind spots, and no shoulders. Please ride carefully and follow the rules of the road.
