I'm vegan but my pets are not :-) I have three cats and an old dog. I work as a writer and editor as well as hosting guests, and I really enjoy international travellers. My beliefs, education and lifestyle are both Eastern and Western, always with a focus on conscious living.

Guests who have specific skills like gardening and DIY/handyman may be able to arrange a work retreat for a few days, as long as I don't have other bookings coming up. This means you can stay for a few days free of charge in return for your time and skills in maintaining the property. Please book for at least two nights first, so we can meet and discuss the possibility - it's not guaranteed.

Neighborhood
Getting around the area
My house is in Sundowner, Johannesburg. This is a friendly and upmarket suburb with many trees and wide streets. It is one of the safest neighbourhoods in Johannesburg. The area is quiet and not densely built up, with relatively large properties. My house is in walking distance (approx. 2 km) from both Northgate Mall and Northwold shopping centre. Bolt and Uber hang out at Northgate, so you'll never have to wait long for a ride. If you have your own car, you can park inside the property, behind a locked gate. You can have the best of both worlds here: suburban life on the peaceful outskirts of the city.

About This Space
A closer look at the stay
About
The Bodhi Hut is a little wodden cabin. It is a simple but comfortable room with its own kitchenette and private toilet. It's great for a short stay. There's a private shower in the garden and carport parking for a car. You'll have your own entrance and can do your own thing. There are cats and a dog living on the property, which means this space isn't suitable for people with allergies. What guests love is the privacy and peacefulness of this space - not to mention a good wi-fi! Although the hut is separate from my house, I ask guests to respect that this is a vegan property and not cook meat or fish while staying here. You can cook vegetarian and vegan meals. If you must have other food, there are restaurants nearby.
The space
My place is great if you want to visit the Cradle of Humankind. It's also quite close to Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens and Hartbeespoort Dam, which are all tourist attractions and great for a day visit. There are also noteworthy museums and other cultural sites in and around Johannesburg. In my suburb there are shopping centres, a gym, a Thai spa, and parks (although walking alone might not be safe). There are some great vegan restaurants not far away. The suburb is generally very safe and peaceful. I have a small collection of books on Buddhism, Western psychology and trauma recovery, and reincarnation and consciousness studies. Guests are welcome to borrow these while they're staying here.
The kitchen
The Bodhi Hut has its own small kitchen area, including a bar fridge, small microwave, coffee maker, kettle, and toaster. There is some counter space but it's small. If you want to do extensive cooking, this spot might not be a good match for you. I strive to limit my guests to vegetarians and vegans, and generally my place attracts people who resonate. However, I don't police what my guests eat or cook because this is a self-catering room. It's possible the kitchen items might have been used to prepare non-veg meals by another guest. I clean everything thoroughly after each guest (yes, I know there is more to it than that, but human nature is beyond my control!).
Other things to note
There are cats and a dog living here. The wi-fi is strong and clear. The place is quiet, but my neighbours' dogs sometimes bark, as dogs do, including early in the morning at times. There is also a child living nearby, who generally doesn't play in the garden much, but on some days (especially on weekends), they do, and this can last for a couple of hours. There haven't been any incidents of loud noise from local resuarants or pubs. It's just a quiet suburban area.
