Lake Iseo
Created in ancient times by the excavating action of a large alpine glacier, Sebino Lake is the sixth by extension among Italian lakes, but holds the singular record of having the largest and highest lake island in Europe, Monte Isola, which is encircled by the two little islands of Loreto and San Paolo.
While sailing on the lake, the eye is drawn to a landscape that shows the beautiful encounter between the Alpine and the Mediterranean environments. The alpine world is shown in the crown of the mountains drenched in white in the winter season, the abundant waters of river Oglio, the spring rains that make the hills green, the cool breeze that mitigates the summer heat. The mild climate, the bright light of the sky and the flora of which the olive tree is the symbol evoke southern atmospheres instead.
Zone Pyramids
The natural reserve of Zone Pyramids is the unique result of the erosive power of water. Along the road that leads to the Town of Zone, from the eastern shore of Lake Iseo you will find a truly fascinating landscape.
The Zone Pyramids offer a particularly spectacular scenery not only due to the different shapes and majestic dimensions (the most impressive has a height of about 30 meters, a base diameter of 8 meters and is protected at the top by a boulder of four meters in diameter), but also for the contrast of the colours, given by the purple of the pyramids and the scenes from which they emerge. In autumn these colours change by acquiring a wide variety of warm tones, making it an even more fascinating sight. The continuous process of erosion produces constant changes in the Zone Pyramids, changes that can also be observed at a distance of a few tens of years; in fact, even today new samples are created and others are destroyed, leaving very deep cracks similar to canyons in some areas. The entrance to the reserve is located in the Cislano suburb, it is free and there are on-site short itineraries easily accessible on foot in order to better admire the beauty of the Pyramids.
Mount Guglielmo
From a distance the Guglielmo appears as an isolated mountain, with a well-defined shape, but in fact the Mount belongs to an elongated ridge located between Lake Iseo and the middle Val Trompia, of which Castel Bertino is the highest peak (1948 mt), but along which several other peaks line up: Punta Caravina (1847 mt), Pedalta Dosso (1957 mt), Mount Stalletti (1686 mt).
The main feature of Guglielmo Mount may be found in the contrast between the rugged forms of dolomite and those, mild and rounded, produced by the most tender and easily eroded rock formations; this contrast is often observed in the landscape of both sides, such as in the Zone basin, between the two Dolomite chains of Corna Trentapassi and Tisdèl-Fallèra and the soft and crumbly rocks consisting of sandstones, siltstones and marbly limestones that are to be encountered going up to the Cross of Zone. In the same manner, the hollows that correspond to the four passes (Croce di Marone, Colmetta di Gasso, Sella di Spino and Forcella di Sale) are dug in highly erodible rocks as well as the Zone basin and the valley floor of Valli di Gasso and of Opol.
Corna Trentapassi
Corna Trentapassi is a mountain of the Brescian Alpine foothills which is 1248 mt high, located on the eastern shore of Lake Iseo. Isolated from the surrounding pre-alpine hills and jutting into the lake, the mountain peak is a great vantage point despite its modest height.
The name “Trentapassi” (thirty steps) is, in analogy with the nearby Mount Guglielmo, one of the many cases of bad Italianisation of local toponyms; in fact, the Brescian name for the Trentapassi is Trè Tapàs, which means three tips (three points), a name which is immediately confirmed by the aspect of the mountain, which has three clearly visible peaks (with three crosses). The Corna can also boast the fact of being famous because Leonardo da Vinci was inspired by it while painting the background of the Mona Lisa.
