Sunny, welcoming and unconventional private room with London's skyline. Non-grade listed building, non-award winning design, just seriously sustainable and furnished with love and care for the discerning visitor. Public transport 24h, underground station just 3 minutes away, 10min from my door to 'central' London. Walking distance: King's Cross, Camden Town, Regent's Canal and Angel. Organic and fair trade food, easy going host and two feline residents to welcome you! AVAILABILITY: Please contact me before booking, as I have not been able to set 'unavailable dates' in the platform. Thanks.
My approach is to consider you as a friend in principle and to make sure you feel at home, without barriers between us, such as 'you are the guest and I am the host'.
If you are young at heart, have a progressive mind, and want to live life rightly and to the full, you can be very happy here... and I'll be looking forward to meeting you!
You will be my flatmate/s for a few days, and thus you can enjoy pretty much what is in the apartment, as I do. If you feel comfortable, welcome and at ease, so will I.
The pictures don't show the room as it is now. It's been refurbished but I'd like to keep it as a surprise because it's fun and I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy the new décor.
All bed linen and towels are 100% cotton. The duvet sets have been with me for some years now (let's call them 'vintage' ;-), so they are quite soft and lovely. There is space for you in the wardrobe and chest of drawers. Also, a lap table for your laptop, a surge protection, UK plug adaptors and a luggage scale. If you need to wash your clothes, there is a washing machine and vegan washing liquid (all my cleaning products are).
It's a clean, sunny, well equipped and lovely, albeit unpretentious flat. It is also well insulated and warm in winter. I hope you'll be pleasantly surprised at how welcoming and comfy it is. Despite its proximity to the main road, it is very quiet, with good sound insulation between rooms, so you and I can maintain our privacy.
This is a very safe environment. You will have access to everything you need, and the boys will have access to your luggage if you leave it open...
A nice breakfast is included. You are welcome to cook and store things in the fridge, but please remember this is a vegan (not vegetarian) space. You can use all cookware and the essentials (salt, spices, etc.) I bring a bag of locally grown, organic and seasonal veg every week, and you are welcome to use some of them too. If you wish to cook for me, I will love you forever :-))
In the kitchen you'll find: gas hobs; halogen oven; blender; juicer; rice cooker; raclette; microwave; and mini food processor. The rest is the usual stuff: toaster, kettle, pots (including two pressure cookers) and pans. I use filtered water for cooking and drinking, even for the boys' water fountain!
Free access all day. Just be aware please that this is a residential area, and it is important to acknowledge sleeping hours and keep your voice down when returning home late.
Please read everything I wrote in the listing: it's meant to make sure you have a great time here. In the 'House Manual', at the bottom of this section, there is safety information, particularly regarding the boys.
As in many places in UK, it's customary to take your shoes off and leave them at the entrance.
Otherwise, no rules beyond common sense. We are going to be 'flatmates' and there won't be a hierarchical relation between us, but a civilised and affectionate approach --at least from my part.
In any case, I assume that you are like me and prefer to live in a clean and tidy space, without becoming 'obsessive compulsive' about it! Then, you and I should keep common areas clean and tidy; your room is your turf, but I hope you don't keep it like a lion's den.
The boys are the real owners of this place ;-) Both are gentle souls who like meeting people and enjoy our tokens of affection. More than the location, the welcoming space and the very reasonable price, I think they are the best thing in this place!
I live with rather high environmental standards, which I hope you feel happy with.
Social smoking is no problem: you can use the living room --not the bedroom :-( Just please open the window for a while afterwards. The space does not smell unpleasantly and it can be kept that way with a bit of care.
Regarding bringing your animal companion, please contact me before booking, so we can look into how that would work.
Also, if you need the space for some form of gathering, please check with me before, as my apartment may not suit your needs.
As you are unique, your requirements as a visitor are going to be unique too. You can trust that I'll do my best to accommodate you the best I can.
-SECURITY: Please remember to lock the door when you leave and when you stay at home, as it doesn't lock by itself.
-BATHROOM: Please leave the door stopper in place to ensure the boys can use the litter tray.
-BEDROOM: Please NEVER leave the window open and unattended, because the boys have a thing for the birds and it could be a lethal drop if they fall. And they are quick like lightening!
-LIVING ROOM/OPEN PLAN KITCHEN: WiFi is always on. Please remember to close the window when you leave.
Islington is one of London's 32 boroughs. It is situated north of the Thames, and it is bordered by: Camden (west), Hackney (east), Haringey (north) and The City (south). In case you are not aware, the term 'central London' is rather inaccurate. Is Westminster the centre?, the City?, King's Cross? Soho and the West End?, Hyde Park?, Kensington and Chelsea? All of those areas could be considered so, thus it is important that you know beforehand what part/s of London you need close access to. This apartment is near King's Cross, in the border of zones 1 and 2, and the public transport network with other 'central' areas is superb. Furthermore, this part of Islington is particularly well connected to international airports and stations, and to the entire city. Caledonian Road north side used to be a quite rough area. With the ongoing gentrification, it has become a very sought after location, and several student accommodations have been built around the transport hubs. There is a good 24h shop just 3 min walk, and a couple of small but charming parks nearby, one of them with an animal farm. Also a Victorian clock tower, a rare landmark remembering the Metropolitan Cattle Market that existed here. You have several trendy areas within walking distance: in Islington (Upper Street, Angel) and Camden (Camden Town, Kentish Town, King's Cross). You'll have plenty of info about what to do around. Hackney, which is pretty close too, is totally worth exploring.
Lots of cool places around and plenty of things to do. Please do ask me and I'll tell you more about it...
You'll enjoy the best possible public transport, operating 24 hours: underground (tube), buses, overground and trains. The tube and buses taking you to 'central London' are 3 min away; car hire companies (Sixt, Europcar) 5 min walk; the overground and national railway station is 15 min away; a bit further down there is a Santander cycles' docking station; Camden Town and Granary Square (King's Cross) are 25-30 min walk. According to Transport For London's website (TfL), the journey from Caledonian Road to Piccadilly is 12 min.
I would advise you to check TfL's website and consider to buy (online or immediately after your arrival) an Oyster card. It's the most convenient and affordable way to travel around. You can pre-pay the minimum amount, and top up here as needed. If you stay more than 5 days, then you may consider to buy a weekly travelcard for the zones you want to use (normally, you will stay in zones 1 and 2 if just visiting London as a tourist).
