From our nearest cove, one mile from the house, you can see the Bagaduce River emptying out into the ocean, and the coastal village of Castine, directly across the water..
Cape Rosier, in Brooksville, is home to the Holbrook Island Sanctuary State Park (first class hiking ) and the Good Life Center, established in the 1950's by Helen and Scott Nearing, whose work was a seminal influence on the organic farming movement in the United States. Our next door neighbors, Tinder Hearth Bakery, occupy another dear old farmhouse, a 2 minute walk from here. They bake wood-fired, organic sourdough bread and in summer host a monthly Open Mic which draws all levels of performers from near and far. During the summer months they offer Pizza Nights, when you can socialize with the locals and summer visitors. Brooksville's "downtown" is the tiny hamlet of Buck's Harbor. It has a deep, safe harbor, a marina, Yacht Club, general store with a little cafe at the back, a weekly farmers market on Tuesdays from May through October and a fine dining restaurant.
Brooksville is bounded on the west by the Penobscot Bay, on the north and east by the Bagaduce River (a tidal estuary), and on the south by the famous sailing waters of Eggemoggin Reach. It is nearly an island, with just two slim land bridges to the rest of the mainland, and 54 miles of shoreline. It has a protected, insular quality which summer visitors as well as year round residents cherish..
Swimming, Sailing, Kayaking, Cycling...
Beaches here are abundant due to the endless coves, bays, inlets and islands that make up Brooksville's wild and beautiful coastline. Ocean swimming, kayaking and sailing are nearby, as well as many fresh water lakes and ponds. Brooksville has Walker Pond, a 7 mile fresh water pond with public swimming and a boat launch. Visitors often go kayaking in the ocean and along the Bagaduce River, and many of our guests come up to cycle the winding roads (there are hills!). Almost everyone visits Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor at some point during their stay.
More Things to Do on the Peninsula
The coastal village of Blue Hill is a 20 minute drive from the house. It has shops, restaurants, cafes, art galleries, a supermarket, etc. On summer nights the Blue Hill Waterfront Town Park hosts street dances under the stars with Flash in the Pans, the area's long-standing community steel drum band.. The area is also home to the chamber music venue Kneisal Hall, the Stonington Opera House and the Grand Auditorium, featuring international artists in everything from Actors Equity Shakespeare productions to live classical, folk, jazz, rock, and world music performances.

About Your Host
Hello! I am an Iyengar yoga teacher, teaching for 26 years. I love hosting independent, unfussy people from all over the world who come here to detox in the healthy coastal surroundings, explore our pristine coast and mingle with our laid back community. I am easy-going, respectful of privacy, and at the same time treat everyone like family. I enjoy a wide circle of friends and I like to have a lot of time to myself. I love living a simple life.
