Looking for a quiet, cozy, romantic Caribbean getaway for two? The apartment at Hilloway is all those things and more! It’s the perfect home base as you explore all that St. John has to offer. St. John is 3/4 protected national park and offers an unforgettable experience of unspoiled Caribbean beaches and nature. Your hosts are 16 year residents of the island and can give you the inside scoop on what to do and see while you are here.
This wonderful 2 room apartment in our home is completely separate from the main house, with it's own parking, entrance and deck space. It is conveniently located just 2 minutes from the town of Cruz Bay and about 5 minutes from the famous north shore beaches, but is in a quiet and peaceful neighborhood away from the hustle and bustle. The apartment is well appointed with everything you need from linens to beach items to kitchen equipment.
The view from the deck is magical, providing expansive views of St. Thomas, Great St. James, Little St. James, Dog Island and French Cap. On a clear day you can see St. Croix and sometimes even Vieques. In the mornings, it is a perfect spot for a lazy breakfast in the cool island breeze, watching the boats go by and listening to the bananaquits chirping a happy good morning. In the evenings, take in some of the best sunsets on St. John as the sun sinks below the horizon giving way to the moon and stars, as well as the twinkling lights of St. Thomas.
There is a full kitchen with all the basics. Gas range, microwave, small convection oven, blender, barbeque grill.

In the islands we conserve water and electricity as much as possible. No parties. Please be respectful of shared spaces such as the pool. No smoking indoors. There is a three day minimum stay.

We live in the perfect location on St. John - very close to town and not far from the beaches - but in a quiet and tranquil neighborhood. The Virgin Islands National Park encompasses 3/4 of our island, so much of where we live is undeveloped. We have many gorgeous beaches, including Trunk Bay which is consistently named one of the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. The watersports are world class - snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking and SUP boarding to name a few. We also have a lot of lovely hikes for all abilities that not only showcase the beauty of the island, but also our interesting history with sugar mill ruins and ancient petroglyphs. St. John is also just a hop, skip and a jump from the fabulous British Virgin Islands and day trips are easily arranged (passport needed).
Our main airport is the Cyril E. King airport in Charlotte Amalie on our neighboring island of St. Thomas. There are several airlines that fly into St. Thomas (STT) including American, Continental, Delta, Jet Blue, Spirit, and United Airlines. Once you land on St. Thomas, you will need take a taxi to the ferry dock. The best and most dependable ferry route is between Red Hook on St. Thomas and Cruz Bay on St. John - this ferry runs every hour on the hour. Once you get to St. John, you can pick up your car and drive to the house (clear directions will be emailed to you) or you can arrange for us to pick you up and take you back to the house.
Renting a car is recommended, but not absolutely necessary. The walk into town from the apartment is downhill and takes only about 10 minutes, but because we live high on a hill the walk home will be strenuous - especially in the hot Caribbean sun. If you choose not to rent a car, you can walk into town in the mornings and get a taxi to the beaches or catch the bus to Coral Bay. If you don't want to walk up the hill to get home you can usually get a taxi to drop you off at the top of our road, though that is not a guarantee so you should be prepared and fit enough to walk up just in case.

50% deposit due at time of booking with the balance due within 2 months of arrival. If booking 2 months or less ahead, the total balance is due at the time of booking. There is a three day minimum stay. VI Hotel Tax included.

Should you be forced to cancel for any reason and a replacement rental is obtained, your deposit will be refunded, less 10% of the complete rental rate. Reservations canceled less than 90 days in advance of reservation date will incur an additional 10%penalty. No monies will be refunded unless a replacement rental is obtained. No-shows, late arrivals, a reduction in the number of persons in your group, and early departures after your arrival are non-refundable.

Hello! We are Jena and Anthony, your hosts. We have been residents of St. John, USVI for the past 16 years and are so blessed to call this beautiful island home. We adopted a plant-based diet about 2 years ago out of necessity to cure a health issue, but now we love eating this way and can't imagine ever going back! Jena has always loved cooking, and recently became a certified plant-based chef. We love sharing our home and island with guests and we're sure you will have a wonderful and memorable vacation!

In general, St. John can be a challenging place to visit if you have a special diet. Jena is a certified plant-based chef and can help you have an enjoyable vacation by provisioning the kitchen with delicious homemade condiments and staples, as well as hard to find grocery items.
